Getting here

The house is at 1 Blaven Road, on a quiet residential street on the hill above Portree harbour. The town centre, the bus station in Somerled Square, the harbour and the restaurants are all five minutes' walk away. Postcode for satnav: IV51 9PH.

By car

Most people drive over the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, which is free and open all year. From the bridge, Portree is about forty-five minutes on the A87. Drive times are roughly three hours from Inverness, and five to six hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh, depending on traffic and how often you stop for the view.

The scenic alternative is the Mallaig to Armadale ferry (CalMac), a crossing of around half an hour, then about an hour's drive up the island to Portree. In summer it is worth booking the ferry in advance. From Easter to October there is also the tiny turntable ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea, the old way onto the island, which takes a handful of cars at a time and is an adventure in itself.

Fill up before the bridge if you can; there are petrol stations in Broadford and Portree, but distances between them are long and prices on the island are higher.

Parking at the house is on the drive and available on request. Tell us when you book so we can keep a space for you.

By bus

Scottish Citylink runs direct coaches to the bus station in Somerled Square, Portree, five minutes' walk from the house. Route 917 from Inverness takes about three and a quarter hours; routes 915 and 916 from Glasgow, via Fort William, take around six to seven hours. Book seats in advance in summer. Tell us your arrival time and we will make sure someone is here, or that the keys are in the lockbox.

By train

The nearest station is Kyle of Lochalsh, at the end of the line from Inverness (about two and a half hours, one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain). From Kyle, the Citylink 917 bus continues over the bridge to Portree in about an hour. Alternatively, take the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Mallaig and cross on the ferry to Armadale, then the bus north to Portree.

By air

Inverness is the nearest airport, about three hours' drive. Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are five to six hours away. Car hire is available at all three; on Skye itself there is no public transport to the sights, so a car is the practical choice for most visitors.

When you arrive

Check in is between 14:00 and 18:00. If you will be earlier or later, call or message us before you travel so we can arrange it. For late arrivals there is a lockbox beside the front door: we will send you the code.

Once you have parked, the car can stay where it is. Portree's restaurants, pubs and the harbour are all within a five-minute walk, and the walk back up the hill is a good end to the evening.
